Pulmonology :

Pulmonology is the field of medicine that focuses specifically on the respiratory system. The respiratory system includes the organs that help you breathe.


Pulmonologist

A pulmonologist is a doctor who diagnoses and treats all diseases related to the respiratory system. Respiratory system includes lungs and other organs that help humans to breathe.


When do you need a Pulmonologist:

There are some very short lasting illnesses and they don't usually don't affect your lungs. Flu or general pneumonia don't usually last that long and can be treated by a regular doctor and there is no need for a pulmonologist.


But if your cough and shortness of breath are increasing with every passing day and there are other symptoms , it is highly recommended to see a doctor.


Parts of the respiratory System :

  • Mouth

  • Nose and Sinuses

  • Pharynx(throat)

  • Larynx( Voicebox)

  • Trachea (Windpipe)

  • Lungs

  • Diaphragm

A pulmonologist usually treats all the parts related to the respiratory system.


Common diseases treated by Pulmonoligst:

There are very common diseases that are treated by Pulmonoligst on an almost regular basis , Here are some of them :


  1. Pneumonia - an infection that makes the air sacs (alveoli) in your lungs inflamed and filled with pus.

  2. COVID-19 pneumonia - which can cause severe breathing problems and respiratory failure.

  3. Asthma - a disease that inflames and narrows your airways and makes it hard to breathe

  4. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD) - a group of lung diseases that includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis

  5. Tuberculosis - a bacterial infection of the lungs

  6. Bronchitis - when the airways are inflamed, with a cough and extra mucus. It can lead to an infection.

  7. Lung Cancer - a type of cancer that starts in the lungs.

  8. Pulmonary Hypertension (High BP) is in the arteries of your lungs.
